So, you’re getting emergency care or seeing a doc at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center—good news! You’re shielded from those sneaky extra charges, aka balance billing. That means you won’t pay more than your plan’s copays, coinsurance, or deductible. Sweet, right?
What’s This “Balance Billing” (aka Surprise Billing) All About?
When you visit a doctor or healthcare provider, you might owe some out-of-pocket costs like copays, coinsurance, or a deductible. But if you go to an out-of-network provider or facility (one not signed up with your health plan), you could face extra fees—or even the whole bill!
“Out-of-network” just means they haven’t made a deal with your plan to keep costs in check. These folks can charge you the difference between what your plan covers and their full price—yep, that’s balance billing. It’s usually pricier than in-network rates and might not even count toward your deductible or yearly out-of-pocket max. Ouch!

Where You’re Protected from Balance Billing:
- Emergency Services. Got an emergency? If you hit up an out-of-network provider or place for help, they can only bill you up to your plan’s out-of-network rate. No balance billing allowed here! This even covers stuff after you’re stable, unless you sign away your rights in writing for those post-stabilization services.
- Certain Services at In-Network Spots. At an in-network hospital or surgical center, some providers (think emergency docs, anesthesiologists, pathologists, radiologists, neonatologists, assistant surgeons, hospitalists, or intensivists) can only charge you the in-network cost-sharing amount. They can’t hit you with extra bills or ask you to ditch your protections.
You’re never forced to give up your balance billing shield, and you don’t have to go out-of-network. Pick a provider or place in your plan’s network if you want to stay safe!
